Our Time Press Endorses Councilman Al Vann for Re-Election
October 2, 2009

Why Al Vann? Because we are at war. The unemployment rate for Black men is said to be 50%,matching the school dropout rate. 64% of the national prison population comes from the African-American community. Health statistics show obesity, prostate cancer, hypertension, AIDS andother ailments are at peak levels in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Foreclosure and sheer economicdistress are the daily fare for too many here.

Public School Parents' Political Action Committee (NYC Kids PAC) Endorses Al Vann
September 11, 2009

Public school parents from across New York City have joined together to establish a new Political Action Committee, NYC Kids PAC, to work for the changes we demand in our schools.

Parents learned from the school governance battle in Albany last spring, and the struggle in the City Council for an education capital plan that would address pervasive school overcrowding, that we need elected representatives who take their responsibilities to our kids seriously and act on them when it counts. We call for real action to end overcrowding, ensure parent input, give our children real opportunity and protect their civil rights. We will build parent power through the ballot box.

In Pursuit of Excellence... Coucil of Leaders Forms to Help
"The High" Defy Statistics

May 29, 2009

Councilman Vann says that Boys and Girls High serves a “unique and significant function” with things that are very good about it and things that have to be improved to survive as a community school.  “It was along those lines that we asked people if they wanted to serve.  What is great is that so many Bedford-Stuyvesant leaders and community residents feel strongly enough about our school that they were willing to put their time and energy into making things better in our community.”

Term Limits Letter
Winter 2009

Prior to the passage of Int. 845-A, which extended “term limits” for an additional term; I would be leaving office on December 31, 2009. In August of 2008, I convened a distinguished group of community leaders from Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights to serve on a Community Leadership Committee. The Committee’s sole purpose was to identify persons who wished to become candidates for the 36th Council District seat, evaluate their credentials, interview them, and then “rate” them as being “highly qualified”, “qualified” or perhaps not rated at all.

Connecting Poverty Reduction to Economic Development By Al Vann
July 14th, 2008

I'm convinced that we have the ability and the moral obligation to significantly reduce the number of New Yorkers who live in poverty. Int. 801, the Community Impact Report bill that was introduced at the Council's June 29 stated meeting, began as part of an earnest effort to figure out how we could translate economic development policies into poverty reduction strategies.

“My house was right about here somewhere,” Council Member Al Vann (D-Brooklyn) said recently as he stood in a parking lot in Bedford-Stuyvesant on a cold, gray morning. Motioning with his hands toward the pavement, he tried to map out what used to be 626 Herkimer St.
